Serving Long Grove, IL — Part of Our Lake & McHenry Counties Service Area
Long Grove passed one of the first Historic Landmark Ordinances in the entire country in 1962 — requiring new construction and remodeling throughout the village to conform to a specific architectural character known locally as 'Long Grove Style.' That ordinance shaped the village into what it is today: a preserved farming-community aesthetic with cobblestone walks, flowering gardens, and a downtown that still looks and functions like the small 19th-century crossroads village it started as. The village itself was formally incorporated in 1956 — six years before the ordinance locked in the visual identity.
The village's most recognizable landmark is the Robert Parker Coffin Bridge, a single-lane covered bridge on the National Register of Historic Places that spans Buffalo Creek on Old McHenry Road. The underlying structure is a 1906 Pratt pony truss bridge built by the Joliet Bridge and Iron Company. When the truss started showing its age in the late 1960s, village architect and long-time President Robert Parker Coffin designed a wooden covering to decrease its maximum height and deter heavier vehicles — modeled on the Ashuelot, New Hampshire covered bridge — and the covering was installed in 1972. The bridge was renamed in Coffin's honor in 2022. Downtown Long Grove holds decades of independent boutiques, antique stores, a year-round Christmas shop, chocolate and fudge makers, and specialty retailers. The village hosts three annual festivals: Chocolate in May, Strawberry in June, and Apple in September.
Long Grove's preservation ordinance is the central constraint on every exterior maintenance decision. Historic frame buildings, hand-hewn barn-wood cladding, cedar shake, century-old brick, cobblestone walks, and original hardware across the downtown district cannot take standard pressure washing. Everything here requires soft-wash treatment calibrated to the material age. Residential properties inside the village — most on multi-acre lots under 'Long Grove Style' building requirements — carry similar historic-sensitive materials plus modern additions that have to blend in visually. Roofs range from cedar shake to slate to heritage-style asphalt. Gutter work is frequently copper, which bends easily under the wrong tools.
