Libertyville is one of the older villages in Lake County — incorporated in 1882, though the settlement itself traces back to 1835 when it was called Vardin's Grove, then Independence Grove, then Burlington, before settling on Libertyville in 1837. The Des Plaines River forms much of the village's eastern boundary, and Milwaukee Avenue (Route 21) runs straight through the center as Main Street, anchoring the downtown historic district.
The downtown story is specific. A fire in 1895 destroyed most of the business block, and the village board mandated brick for all reconstruction. The residential stock is just as varied. Cook Mansion, built in 1879 and operating as a museum today, sits near Cook Park. The older streets off Milwaukee hold Victorian homes, bungalows, and early-20th-century craftsman builds. The newer side of the village has 1950s-70s ranches and split-levels, plus 1990s and 2000s subdivisions on the west side and toward Green Oaks. Adlai Stevenson II's estate — bought from a portion of the former Samuel Insull property — sits on the eastern edge along the Des Plaines River, and the tree-canopied streets around there have a completely different maintenance pattern than the postwar builds on the west.
