Northbrook started out as Shermerville. The village incorporated in 1901 under that name, in honor of Frederick Schermer, who donated land for the town's first railroad station. In 1923 — after a renaming contest — the village became Northbrook, borrowing its new name from the West Fork of the North Branch of the Chicago River that runs through the community. The old name left behind 'Shermer Road,' which still runs through the historic downtown centered on the Shermer–Meadow intersection.
Two institutional landmarks anchor the Northbrook identity. Techny Towers, built by the Society of the Divine Word in 1901 as their North American headquarters and a technical school (from which the Techny neighborhood took its name), still stands on the north side of the village. The residential stock is a postwar-to-present patchwork. Northbrook West and Northbrook Park are long-established single-family neighborhoods north of Techny Road. Southbridge Commons went up in the 1960s south of Techny on Shermer. Wildebrook was built late 1970s to mid 1980s off Dundee and Sanders.
