Lake Zurich got its name in 1847, when early settler Seth Paine renamed the village's 228-acre glacial lake — originally called Cedar Lake — after Switzerland's Lake Zurich, inspired by the clear, deep waters of both. The settlement had been known as Sheldon's Grove at the time; the new name stuck, and by September 29, 1896, the village was formally incorporated.
