Serving Inverness, IL — Part of Our Lake & McHenry Counties Service Area
Inverness started as a 1926 land play with a Scottish name. Arthur T. McIntosh, one of Chicago's most active land developers, bought the Temple farmstead (originally built by Ralph Atkinson) and combined it with the former Cudahy Company Golf Course and nine other parcels to assemble 1,500 contiguous acres southwest of what's now Palatine. He named the development Inverness after his clan's ancestral home in Scotland. Way Thompson laid out the road system to follow the rolling contours of the land, and a one-acre minimum lot size was established to preserve the rural character. The first homes went up around the Inverness Golf Club and were occupied by 1939, priced $9,500 to $20,000 at the time.
The design rules were strict from day one and they still are: no fences between properties, no streetlights along the roads, no curbs on the pavement. McIntosh planted thousands of trees across the development, many of which are now a century old and form the canopy that shades the winding village streets. The village was formally incorporated in 1962. Today Inverness runs roughly 1,500 acres bordered by Barrington Road west, Roselle Road east, Algonquin Road south, and Dundee Road north.
The no-streetlights, no-curbs, rural-aesthetic framework means the housing here has a specific character: most homes sit on at least one acre, many on two or more, with long paver or asphalt driveways that pick up a lot of organic staining before anyone notices. Mature tree canopy across the village drops serious leaf volume into gutters every fall. Cedar and natural wood exteriors — common across the older McIntosh-era homes — need soft-wash rather than pressure stripping. Newer custom builds added over the decades carry the full range of materials: stone veneer, cedar shake, composite decking, slate and tile roofing, flagstone patios. Each surface needs a different cleaning approach.

Once a year for siding and decks. No-streetlights, no-curbs, rural-aesthetic framework means long paver and asphalt driveways that collect organic staining at estate scale. Century-old McIntosh-era tree canopy drives serious fall leaf volume into gutters. Cedar and natural wood exteriors on older homes need soft-wash rather than pressure stripping. Newer custom builds carry stone veneer, cedar shake, composite decking, slate and tile roofing, flagstone patios — each surface needs a different cleaning approach. Driveways and walkways benefit from a wash every 12 months too.
